The Diversity Compass: a clinical ethics support instrument for dialogues on diversity in healthcare organizations.Charlotte Kröger, Bert Molewijk, Maaike Muntinga & Suzanne Metselaar - 2024 - BMC Medical Ethics 25 (1):1-14.
Background Increasing social pluralism adds to the already existing variety of heterogeneous moral perspectives on good care, health, and quality of life. Pluralism in social identities is also connected to health and care disparities for minoritized patient (i.e. care receiver) populations, and to specific diversity-related moral challenges of healthcare professionals and organizations that aim to deliver diversity-responsive care in an inclusive work environment. Clinical ethics support (CES) services and instruments may help with adequately responding to these diversity-related moral challenges. However, (...)

    Souls great and small: Aristotle on self-knowledge, friendship and civic engagement.Suzanne Stern-Gillet - 2014 - In .
Aristotle’s portrait of the man of great soul in both the Eudemian and the Nicomachean Ethics has long perplexed commentators. Although his portrait of the man of small soul has been all but ignored by commentators, it, too, contains a number of claims that are profoundly counter-intuitive to the modern cast of mind. The paper is an attempt at identifying the nature of the discrepancies between Aristotle’s values and our own, and at placing the ethical claims that he makes on (...)

Sociolinguistic Challenges of Prosecuting Rape as Genocide at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda: the Trial of Jean-Paul Akayesu.Narelle Fletcher - 2022 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 35 (4):1597-1614.
The trial of Jean-Paul Akayesu is by far the most well known and widely discussed case at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a distinction that can be attributed to the fact that it was groundbreaking for several reasons. However, with regard to the importance of this trial both as a precedent for subsequent ICTR cases and within the broader context of international jurisprudence, its most significant contribution has undoubtedly been the recognition and prosecution of rape as a means of (...)

On the Insufficiency of Linear Diagrams for Syllogisms.Oliver Lemon & Ian Pratt - 1998 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 39 (4):573-580.
In Volume 33:1 of the Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic, a system for diagramming syllogistic inferences using straight line segments is presented by Englebretsen. In light of recent research on the representational power of diagrammatic representation systems by the authors, we point out some problems with the proposal, and indeed, with any proposal for representing logically possible situations diagrammatically. We shall first outline the proposed linear diagrammatic system of Englebretsen, and then show by means of counterexamples that it is (...)

Controlling futures? Online Genetic Testing and Neurodegenerative Disease: Comment on “Personal Genomic Testing, Genetic Inheritance, and Uncertainty”.Narelle Warren & John Gardner - 2017 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 14 (4):593-594.
Online personalized genetic testing services offer accessible and convenient options for satisfying personal curiosity about health and obtaining answers about one’s genetic provenance. They are especially attractive to healthy people who wish to learn about their future risk of disease, as Paul Mason’s case study of “Jordan” illustrates. In this response, we consider how online genetic testing services are used by people diagnosed with a common neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson’s disease, to gain a sense of certainty regarding the future.

Thinking in Time: An Introduction to Henri Bergson.Suzanne Guerlac - 2006 - Cornell University Press.
"In recent years, we have grown accustomed to philosophical language that is intensely self-conscious and rhetorically thick, often tragic in tone. It is enlivening to read Bergson, who exerts so little rhetorical pressure while exacting such a substantial effort of thought.... Bergson's texts teach the reader to let go of entrenched intellectual habits and to begin to think differently—to think in time.... Too much and too little have been said about Bergson. Too much, because of the various appropriations of his (...)

Integrating Climate Change Adaptation and Human Development: A Commentary.John Lemons - 2010 - Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics 10 (2):47–52.
I discuss why integration of global climate change and human development aid programs requires consideration of some understudied uncertainties in making projections of future climate and environmental conditions at local and regional scales, and further, the value-laden policy consequences of dealing with uncertainties for national and international development programs. Additionally, I propose that conflicts between the interests of humans and other species be given greater attention than has been done by those involved in human development aid.

Reimagining Inclusive Music Education: Reflections from a Black Music Educator.Suzanne Hall - 2024 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 32 (1):62-82.
The Eurocentric canon remains the predominant focus of music education often excluding the role of music and experiences of Black individuals and people of color. This singular perspective creates an incomplete and inaccurate understanding of the comprehensive nature of music and the humans who create, perform, and engage with it. In this article, the author shares her experience as a Black music educator and her aspirations for a music profession that incorporates the full range of human music engagement and expression. (...)

Capable but Amoral? Comparing AI and Human Expert Collaboration in Ethical Decision Making.Suzanne Https://Orcidorg Tolmeijer, Markus Https://Orcidorg Christen, Serhiy Kandul, Markus Https://Orcidorg Kneer & Abraham Https://Orcidorg Bernstein - unknown
While artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied for decision- making processes, ethical decisions pose challenges for AI applica- tions. Given that humans cannot always agree on the right thing to do, how would ethical decision-making by AI systems be perceived and how would responsibility be ascribed in human-AI collabora- tion? In this study, we investigate how the expert type (human vs. AI) and level of expert autonomy (adviser vs. decider) influence trust, perceived responsibility, and reliance. We find that partici- pants (...)

Communication about Advance Directives: Are Patients Sharing Information with Physicians?Suzanne B. Yellen, Laurel A. Burton & Ellen Elpern - 1992 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 1 (4):377.
Historically, patients have deferred to physicians′ judgments about appropriate medical care, thereby limiting patient participation in treatment decisions. In this model of medical decision making, physicians typically decided upon the treatment plan. Communication with patients focused on securing their cooperation in accepting a treatment decision that essentially had already been made.

Lemon explains the crucial differences between speculative philosophy as an n enquiry into the course and meaning of history and analytic philosophy of history as relating to the nature and (...)

The Religious and Romantic Origins of Psychoanalysis: Individuation and Integration in Post-Freudian Theory.Suzanne R. Kirschner - 1996 - Cambridge University Press.
In this book, Suzanne Kirschner traces the origins of contemporary psychoanalysis back to the foundations of Judaeo-Christian culture, and challenges the prevailing view that modern theories of the self mark a radical break with religious and cultural tradition. Instead, she argues, they offer an account of human development which has its beginnings in biblical theology and neoplatonic mysticism. Drawing on a wide range of religious, literary, philosophical and anthropological sources, Dr Kirschner demonstrates that current Anglo-American psychoanalytic theories are but (...)

Participatory development of CURA, a clinical ethics support instrument for palliative care.Suzanne Metselaar, Guy Widdershoven, H. Roeline Pasman & Malene Vera van Schaik - 2022 - BMC Medical Ethics 23 (1):1-12.
BackgroundExisting clinical ethics support (CES) instruments are considered useful. However, users report obstacles in using them in daily practice. Including end users and other stakeholders in developing CES instruments might help to overcome these limitations. This study describes the development process of a new ethics support instrument called CURA, a low-threshold four-step instrument focused on nurses and nurse assistants working in palliative care. MethodWe used a participatory development design. We worked together with stakeholders in a Community of Practice throughout the (...)

Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide: Environmental Ethics and Environmental Facts.John Lemons - 1983 - Environmental Ethics 5 (1):21-32.
Environmental philosophers often assurne that we lack metaethical concepts and normative criteria for environmental decisions, but that we have all the facts we need from the environmental sciences. This is contested in the case of our obligation to future generations as affected by current decisions regarding increased fossil fuel use, decisions which affect both the inlmediate and long-range future, and whichmust be made deliberately or by default before we know the long-term effects of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Some (...)

Learning from deep brain stimulation: the fallacy of techno-solutionism and the need for ‘regimes of care’.John Gardner & Narelle Warren - 2019 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 22 (3):363-374.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for the debilitating motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. However, clinicians and commentators have noted that DBS recipients have not necessarily experienced the improvements in quality of life that would be expected, due in large part to what have been described as the ‘psychosocial’ impacts of DBS. The premise of this paper is that, in order to realise the full potential of DBS and similar interventions, clinical services need to (...)

Recognition, Authority Relations, and Rejecting Hate Speech.Suzanne Whitten - 2019 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 22 (3):555-571.
A key focus in many debates surrounding the harm in hate speech centres on the subordinating impact hate speech has on its victims. Under such a view, and provided there exists a requisite level of speaker authority a particular speech situation, hate speech can be conceived as something which directly impact’s the victim’s status, and can be contrasted to the view that such speech merely expresses hateful ideas. Missing from these conceptions, however, are the ways in which intersubjective, recognition-sensitive relations (...)
